Depends on how long of a spike you're using and where you have it mounted. The boat I just sold had a deck mounted motor and a 6ft spike. I never kept mine in the full up position because it would rattle, I always kept the spike either touching the water or just above it so the top of the spike was usually about 5 feet off the deck of the boat or 6 feet off the water, give or take a few inches. I even have a 4ft spike I used on occasion. I bought my spikes from Grainger rather than powerpole. Any 3/4 inch rod will work.

did not know this, i'll look into getting a smaller one. im usually in less than 5 feet of water anyway
