When not engaged, how high is the pole above the boat?

Depends on how long of a spike you're using and where you have it mounted. The boat I just sold had a deck mounted motor and a 6ft spike. I never kept mine in the full up position because it would rattle, I always kept the spike either touching the water or just above it so the top of the spike was usually about 5 feet off the deck of the boat or 6 feet off the water, give or take a few inches. I even have a 4ft spike I used on occasion. I bought my spikes from Grainger rather than powerpole. Any 3/4 inch rod will work.

shoot me an email, ill sent you a video.

the pole itself is 8.5 feet, we hooked up a go pro to the top and got great video of it if I can get my dad to email it to me. since its in the back of the boat, no one has a problem fishing with it. no worse than having a t-top or a bunch of 7 foot rods off a leaning post or off the console
