1. shouldn't it be smelling a certain perfume bring back memories of old girlfriends?
2. interestingly, our olfactory center of our brain is linked closely to our limbic system (I think), thus a particular smell can directly trigger an emotion associated with that smell.
For me the smell of formaldehyde still throws me back to first year medical school and I could instantly recalled the stress and weariness of gross anatomy.
