This is a very well written, quick read.

Just texted her... She said "is it downstairs or in the attic?"

It's in the attic. May be a couple days.

tell her old arse to get up there and get it

I'm kidding obviously. Thanks for checking with her. I think my uncle, who I haven't spoken with in like 4 years, studied the Civil War extensively at one point. I guess I could try and get in touch with him and see if he has any old books. He's kind of an a-hole though

Battle Cry of Freedom by James McPherson is the best single-volume on the Civil War.

For the military history of the war, check out Shelby Foote's massive three-volume work entitled: The Civil War: A Narrative.

The one I'm talking about is 10x14" and 2" thick. It was from the 60s or early 70s. The original dustjacket had a dusky sunrise with cannons in the foreground... The hard cover had a silouette of Robert E Lee embossed in it. It was a pricey book when it was new.

haha that's very nice of you to try and describe what the book looks like, but it might be a little difficult to track it down based on it's dimensions and thickness

I'm sure there are multiple.. but as previously mentioned on the first page Guns of the South by Harry Turtledove is one of those.

As previous posters have mentioned, Shelby Foote's trilogy. If you're interested biographies, Burke Davis has about a dozen. Lee, Jackson, Sherman, etc.

he very well may. I'll probably check with him since I bet he has some hard-to-find books on the topic. He just doesn't associate with my side of the family very much
