Maybe put a flag on it if you feel like doing so

This. Ratchet straps are all you need. Just make sure anything loaded inside the canoe is towards the front of the bed. You'll be fine.

As Pop mentiined, I did this regularly. Even 2 14' yaks back there. No bed extender needed.

This is what I do for my 14' pirogue but I only go < 10 miles. If I had to go further I'd get the trailer hitch extender
ETA this is in a F150 5.5' bed
