All you have to do is pick up the phone and tell them to stop delivering the weekly papers. I did this at my parents house with both The Advocate and The T-P.

I also threatened a lawsuit if my parents fell while trying to pick up newspaper trash in their yard (they're in their mid to high 80s)

tried this to no avail. Also, years ago I cancelled the actual paper and kept getting it even after I called until I moved. I suspect they would rather deliver papers that are unwanted and unpaid for to artificially increase their "circulation" numbers bc that is part of how they price ads.
