Yeah I'd be pretty irritated if they didn't pay for my ticket.

The company should reimburse you. I've never traveled a long distance (I.e. Air-travel) for an interview that the company didn't pay for.
If they invite you for an interview, they should probably suggest a phone interview to start with and then decide if they want to fly you in.
