If you're going to interview with a small to mid-sized company out of state...

How often would you expect them to pay for travel expenses for your interview?
I know that if you're interviewing with a major company (Lowe's, Capital One, Target, etc.) they'll fly you out, put you up in a hotel, sometimes pay for your meals...but what about a tech startup or local healthcare organization?
I'm asking because I'm starting to send out a good number of applications now that graduation is approaching, and I'd like to know what to expect.

If you are going for a job interview, why would expect anything.
If you want the job, you are the one putting forth the effort, not them

For engineering, the norm was they would pay for travel expenses.

Tell the first company that you already went to another company first and it is their turn to pay your expenses.
tl/dr: I hope you interview more clearly than you compose questions here.

I would think they would pay your expenses. I work for a non profit, and when we fly someone in to interview, we pay their expenses.

Depends on company and position. I once applied with Verizon and made it fairly far in interview process. Flew out of state and obtained a rental car. Never was reimbursed.

I would expect any company that is inviting me for an onsite interview that take hours of driving or flying to get to to foot the bill. Do I want the job? Maybe. But I'm not going to fork over hundreds of dollars for you to interview me.

Very unprofessional for a company not to reimburse all travel, food and rental car expense.

I would 100% expect them to cover all costs.

Yellowfin nailed it. However I would think most companies hiring a kid right out of school would reimburse.
