Can you use 15.10? That's the latest version. If not go for the lts which I think it's 14.04. In any case it should definitely work. Not sure what the issue you're having is. Might need to reinstall or re-download your install media. You could also try to Google and see what you get. As a last resort you could try using Ubuntu with a different desktop environment in case unity is somehow throwing you off. That would be kubuntu or xubuntu or Ubuntu gnome edition. Something like that.

Its weird, I can only get version 12.04 going. I tried 14.04 first and it gets caught in the log in loop, then tried 15.10 and it does the same, 13.10 will just give me a black screen and does nothing.
We are using ROS Indigo which according to the installation Wiki is only supported on 14.04 or 13.10 ( LINK)
I Googled trying to use Indigo on 12.04 and it says its possible but you have to "build from source" which has instructions here ( LINK2) but I really don't know what the hell that means
