He didn't know where Diaz was. All he knew was that Diaz used the tunnel to smuggle drugs, so he used that lead to find him. I don't think he necessarily knew that he'd be riding with a dirty cop, that's just who happened to be there.

Uh yea he did. They were tracking Diaz with the drone from his home in Arizona.
The best explanation is from the previous poster. He needed to cross without anyone knowing about it.
It was probably the best situation for him to get a cop car rather than be wandering around in the middle of the f-ing desert/being seen crossing in Juarez etc.

Not true. They knew where Diaz was from the satellite. That's how they guided Alejandro to Diaz on the road. The tunnel didn't help him find Diaz.
