Maybe he knew the cartel had spotters looking for him as they figured he would come for revenge. The tunnel , under cover of darkness gave him the best chance to get to Diaz without the op being blown? You would figure boss man knew he was marked and would have had people positioned around every crossing point around Juarez looking for him. Only thing I can figure.
