I can certainly see the issue running wires overhead. Have you thought about running the wires in ground using the spool and bury tool that they run pet containment systems with? Wires being underground should eliminate issues.

The other thing to try is a wireless game can that texts pictures. External antennas can be bought that will give enough signal, even in areas with limited service. @$300 for a good quality camera, and $10 a month to add a line. Not only will he know when the trap is set, he can know exactly what, and how many critters are in it.
