There were articles back then that Bertman met with Saban and asked if matching the Dolphins' money offer would influence his decision. Saban said no. It was an itch that Saban wanted to scratch.

Now would offering double (as Shaq suggests) have made a difference? Nobody knows but that would have been out of the question in 2005, IMO.
