My contribution was he should just spend the $800 on a watch of better quality than a chintzy $200 watch.

$200 may not be a fancy watch. But it's certainly sufficient and can still be a nice watch

Thought you didn't care about brands and such

Burberry watches aren't exactly quality. It's another fashion watch made by Fossil. You're paying for the label more than any quality. Same with Michael Kors watches. Both made by Fossil, just a different label. If you are just getting a fashion accessory for a watch then there's no reason to spend more than about $100 to maybe $200.

ETA: If you are going to go that route you might as well buy directly from fossil and go around the added cost of adding a fashion label.
