Any short barreled, dependable shotgun loaded with #7 1/2 or #8 lead bird shot. Don't worry, at close range that load will do the job and then some. More controllable from the standpoint of safety to others in the home. Better from a self-defense angle too if for some strange reason you wind up in court. Mine is a Remington 1100, 26 inch Improved Cylinder, 5 shots with plug removed. Be sure to clean and oil it from time to time.

Just watched a video on this and the guys tested 71/2 shot all the way to 00buck and the best they found as far as colladeral damage and wall penetration was a #6.

Also if you go the shotgun route only for home defense just get a youth model 20 gauge.
