Didn't Price go to strippers and such? That is the fricking strangest analogy I've seen. It's so disjointed.

Yeah Price never even coached a game at Bama. Terrible example

I was just making a comparison as coaches who were successful in situations that seemed to fit them particularly well. In Price's case, he obviously didn't translate very well elsewhere. We never got to see him at Bama, but his lack of success at UTEP in a very weak conference was telling. He wasn't a good enough or versatile enough coach to translate to a different type of situation. THAT was my point. It really had nothing to do with Bama, other than the fact that his success at WSU got him that gig and made him a hot commodity.

A better comparison would probably be Rich Rod. He was a perfect fit at WVU, and got all the way to the doorstep of a title shot before leaving. He was at a school that had some success before him, but had never sustained it to the degree that he did.

Personality wise, there are similarities between RR and Kelly, which definitely contributed to RR's failure at Michigan. Him going in guns blazing and trying to change not just the offense, but the way things were done around there, didn't set well at all with the establishment. While he's done better at Arizona and seems to be a better fit there culturally, he still hasn't set the world on fire. That doesn't make him a bad coach, necessarily, but I think it calls into question his potential for greatness. In hindsight, it looks like he will only be successful in a certain type of coaching situation.

Again, I'm not guaranteeing that Kelly would fail if he went back to the college game somewhere other than Oregon (which may be a while since he just took the 49ers job), but there is risk associated with him. I think Nick Saban could show up just about anywhere and win big quickly. He's just that good. On the other hand, I honestly think there are Power 5 schools out there where Kelly would struggle, unless he made some adjustments in recruiting and management style. He's a guy with a lot of reward potential, but there is plenty of risk, as well.
