My dad knew him. I must have been about 18 or so, and I was somewhere with my dad and met him. My dad said something like "here's my son" and I introduced myself, giving my first name (remember, I'm with my dad, who knows Boots, and who knows my dad by name - first and last). Boots proceeds to light into me about 'kids these days' not wanting to give their last name when they introduce themselves and only ever want to use their first name.

Very bizarre.

Funny thing is, as little as it made sense in that particular situation, it apparently made an impression on me, as to this day I still think about it whenever meeting someone new, and make a point to give my last name.

RIP

I'll never forget him yelling at people to swing their arms when they run. YOU DON'T WALK WITH YOUR HANDS BY YOUR SIDE, WHY RUN LIKE THAT?!?!?!

Made the mistake of calling him Shoes like a little smart arse when I was at LSU baseball camp. Almost ripped my ear off. My pops told me "You shouldn't have called him Shoes" and laughed at my pain.

I've got a few good Boots memories, but the one that stands out the most to me is when I used to workout/throw with a group of QB's and WR's around BR in the late 90's. One Saturday morning we were on the field at Tara stretching and loosening up. Its in the summer about 95 degrees and here comes Boots in his khaki pants, white long sleeve shirt and safari hat, and of course smoking a cigarette.

We have a new kid in the group so we tell him to go introduce himself to Boots. Boots sticks his still burning cigarette up his nose, and then sticks out his hand to shake the kid's hand. He says, "Howya doin son, Boots Garland. I'm not a role model"

Sad news. He coached me in high school and he was years ahead of everyone else. I remember him mounting a 8mm camera on a makeshift tripod and filming our foot placement as we sprinted toward him.
The following week he came up to me and said, Now we just cut .2 off your time and now we are gonna work with your upper body and get another .10 off. Heck Son, I think if you cut some of that hair off and take off those glasses we might even squeeze another .10 off!

RIP Coach and Thanks
