Me and some buddies at work are thinking about building a camp down in the marsh somewhere... All these ideas and dreams plans are great and everything, but the problem is where to find land?

I had thought the state leases marsh land but wasn't sure. I didn't know if just showing up at the state land office and asking if they have marsh land for lease is the way to do it or not. Sportsman and Craigslist are really no help. Any other ideas on where to start looking?

Are you talking about a permanent camp? Like, something you can only boat to, but built to stand hurricanes?

Lots of people have had that idea. But you don't see many/any camps like that. The cost of building to that standard in the marsh is prohibitive. Would probably cost you $500 per square foot.

A much better solution would be to find an old barge. Build your camp on that. Then put a generator and a motor on it. Much cheaper, and you can move it around when a storm comes. Or when you want to change seasons.

I have a marsh camp. Most leases are from oil companies. It's a huge pain in the arse to build or repair anything unless you live close by and have access to a large boat to haul lumber, etc. unless you can afford to pay someone to do it all.

Other than that, marsh camps are the shite.

as motorboat says, almost all marshland is owned by oil and gas companies and has typically been leased to the same folks for decades. I would say that your best bet would be to buy some piece of shite camp with the intention of tearing it down and rebuilding while taking over the existing lease.

expect to pay a premium to make this happen, though...
