Pain is an excellent teacher.

Doing it out of anger isn't good. But if they know that pain comes as a consequence to disobedience, then you must sit them down, explain to them that every action has a consequence, and deliver said consequence. You don't love them any less, and the pain is fleeting and impermanent. But it is necessary for conditioning.

This is how good parenting is done. One of the main things a parent has to teach their kids is about the consequences of their actions both good and bad. There is a time and place for corporal punishment and not all situations call for it. If you do it right, spankings should be rare and never done in anger.
