Who Here Has Dealt With Pet Loss?

On Christmas night my dog was hit by a car driven by a drunk driver. My wife's son (that visits once a year) left the gate open so he got out.
The drunk frick at least brought my dog to my house. At the time all I could see was an obvious broken leg. By the time we got to the ER Vet, Harley was gone. He died with his head in my lap and it was one of the worst pains I've ever felt.
It's been two weeks tomorrow. The backyard sucks now, and I have no desire to walk around the neighborhood anymore. I was hoping it got better by now. I'm not in the fetal position or anything, but damn if I have the motivation I used to have. I had pets die as a kid but this is different. Harley was my dog. Any advice?
For anyone that remembers this was Harley the day we got him and I posted his pic on here:

Damn dude sorry for your loss.
My 7yr old Treeing Feist had be put down last October, due to sepsis from pneumonia... I'm still not over that yet.

That's terrible. Is your wife eligible to join MADD?

Damn man, that's awful. I'd be a mess. Dogs are a big part of our daily lives and abruptly and tragically losing one is very difficult.
He was a great looking dog. Very sorry for your loss.

I have felt way worse for my passed dog than certain family members.
Get a new dog soon.

it doesn't get any easier but you cope with it better down the road on the strength of the memories and all the good times you had together.
lost mine in may. i still come home some days half expecting her to come to me and go outside like we always did. sorry for your loss.

Sorry for your loss. We lost a pet last year, had to put him down. We were a wreck. None of us could be in there when he was put to sleep. That's my only regret. Even though we were emotional wrecks, I wish I was there for him to see him out instead him being surrounded by strangers and scared. That got me choked up just typing it. Hang in there.

Sucks. We lost our dog on Christmas Eve, six minutes before midnight. The holiday was spoiled, and we miss him bumping around the place.

That's my worst fear anytime my dog gets out our yard. Sorry for your loss. My parents had to put a dog down on the 2nd. That wasn't any fun.

Sorry man. I have had 2 labs for 12 years. Had to put down my chocolate female about a week before thanksgiving. Male got pretty depressed so,we went and got a pound puppy (5 month old Great Pyrenees/Red Heeler). Getting the new one was the best medicine for the whole household. Sorry again

Very sorry to hear that. Losing a pet really does suck. They're family members.

worst pain ever. I was in summer school at LSU and got a call from my mom saying that Claude couldn't stand anymore. He would keep trying to get up and he would just fall back into his bed. Local vet didn't know what was going on so he sent my mom to LSU Vet clinic. I met her and my brother there and we carried him inside. Did a little check-up and we had to put him on a cart to roll him to the back.
We left and grabbed lunch and they called and said he had to stay a few nights while they ran tests. My mom and brother went back to Lafayette. They called us two days later and said he refused to eat. I grabbed him some Cheetohs Puffs and other human food that he liked and brought it to the clinic. They wouldn't let me back to see him, so I left. Called me later and said he wouldn't eat any of what I brought either.
That Sunday, they called and said they they had to put him on oxygen and that they were going to put him to sleep. We were all in Lafayette and my mom gave the go-ahead.
My mom ended up blowing like $7000 on tests and they didn't ever figure out what was wrong. The last memory I have of him is the look he gave as he rolled away on the cart. One of my biggest regrets in life, as lame as that sounds. I would've just taken off work and hung out with him until it was time if I could have.
I'm sorry about Harley. She was very beautiful. Get another one once you feel better and that will help ease the pain.
RIP Claude. He knew the cure to cancer, what was in Marsellus' briefcase, and whether or not Dottie dropped the ball on purpose, but he couldn't and wouldn't tell us. Miss that mfr
We got Sophie as he was getting older and she was always respectful of his space. This was their couch. They both couldn't fit on it, so when he was on it, she would sit on the cushion so that she didn't cram him

Opened up this year losing a dog.

Sorry man. Harley was a badass

Sorry for your loss, bud. Glad you were there for him at the end. My only suggestion would be to get another dog, but that's obviously up to how you feel about it. Hope it gets easier.
