The system we have now can work the same way if we went to an 8 team playoff. The committee can rearrange the final rankings in order for the seedings to create the best match-ups in each bowl.
Bowls:
Sugar
Orange
Cotton
Fiesta
Rose
Peach (bring it back)
Rotate all 6 bowls around each year so 4 of these bowls will be quarterfinals, 2 will be semis, and there can be a final natty at a predetermined location. It's fair to say that a 1 or even 2 loss conference champ in the Power 5 should get into the playoff. a 2 loss conference champ should be obviously be lower in the rankings. 2 of the other slots can be for the 2 highest ranked Power 5 teams and 1 slot for a D1 team not in the power 5. That team MUST finish ranked in the Top 8 otherwise that slot goes to the 3rd highest ranked non-conference champ team in the top 8.
As for the Non-Power 5 team that may make it in, you have to award it to the team that has beaten more ranked opponents. For example: An undefeated Northern Illinois team falls below an 11-1 Memphis that beat #15 Ole Miss.
I'm done.
