It wasn't unfair to LSU. Alabama was #2. The #1 team plays the #2 team under the contemporaneous rules. Each team had more than a month off, so the one week bye doesn't really carry weight. The game was also played in LSU's back yard; I'd think that's a bigger advantage than Alabama's six week (as opposed to LSU's five week) break.

Hate to admit it because I'm an LSU grad.
