It is a good tradition if you have kids. This is the first year I haven't put this train under the tree - a 30's vintage Lionel Blue Comet. It is big and heavy (the trim is copper, for example) - much bigger than what people usually think when they think Lionel train. Kids love it. All I do is lubricate it and it runs as well as it did in the 30's. Lionel really made a quality product.

For size comparison, the tender behind the locomotive is about the size of a shoe box.

I wish they still made things today like they did back then.

Actually I've always wanted to get into model trains. But I couldn't afford it as a kid and I've never gotten around to it as an adult. To do it seriously is very expensive as well as very time consuming. I've been to a few model railroad displays, that's about it.

My parents used to do that.

Until the year i stomped on the train track from running full speed down the stairs as a five year old and put a big hole in my foot from one of the little train crossing bars

We did when I was kid. I don't know what my parents did with the trains we had. They were old, for sure.

Think I will start this next Christmas.

My great aunt and uncle had one when I was a kid. My cousin got it when they died. Still pissed about that.

No way I'd put that model under a tree to be destroyed.

That belongs in a case, on a shelf, or in a very prized model train display.

When I retire I'm going to build model trains. Is that weird?

We did for the past several years, until our Boston Terrier decided last year that she didn't want that train under the tree any longer.

I've always wanted a train set under the tree but never had it. That one is beautiful.

There's a pretty neat train museum at the Glenwood Springs, CO train station if you're ever there. The old train station itself is neat.

That's a fine train bro. I would run it. (IWRI?)

I run one through the Christmas village but not round the tree.
