Anybody who thinks this is about "liberals" or socialism or Islam is just a tad too quick on the auto response to those with whom they disagree.
Who can deny that the academic side is underfunded and underperforms?
Who can deny that the athletic side, particularly football, is well funded and one of the highest compensated in the country?
Are there actually folks here who think this is a good thing?

Yes.

The case for improving academics can (and should) be made independent of mentioning athletics.
It is consistently irritating to me, as an alum, to see faculty attempt to drum up support for the academic side of campus while shaming the LSU community for its support of athletics.

It's a shame how quick people on both sides of the political spectrum are to reach for this.
But to answer your question, there are actually folks who think that the lack of funding for the academic side isn't due to funding on the athletic side. The Athletic Department generates revenue. It doesn't consume funding for the University, but instead provides an alternate income source. Yes, LSU has one of the top 7 facilities for football, it also has one of the top 5 in income generated. It is one of three (not 100% on this one and working from memory) that contribute money back to the academic side. Failing to invest and attract top talent to the football program will only cause this money to disappear. My opinion on Mann's post is essentially - if I buy you a car, I don't want to hear you complaining because I have a nicer car. Yes some of the conditions on campus are dated and not up to the standard they should be, but this is not because all the money from the state is being dumped into athletics. Maybe the money for that lazy river at the rec center could have been used to update the library.

You already knew this, though.

Bob Mann sounds like pussy

Read up on the effect that Alabama's football success has had on admissions and enrollment at UA and the dollars it brings to the University's academic side, Bob Mann. Then GFY you moron.

Well, the Athletic department is funded and run (behind the scenes) by wealthy successful business men. The profit the Dept turns is evidence of that.
The academics side generally has more influence from local gov't and politicians....and it's obvious from the state of the system.

GTFO out with this shite. I've given FAR more money to academics than I have to TAF.
And I got news for you, too. Academic fundraising DWARFS athletics fundraising at LSU.
If LSU wants to get more money for academics, Bob Mann's method is not the way to do it. You do NOT divide athletics and academics in fundraising. They need to work together, for the benefit of BOTH.

Bob Mann is a highly regarded and distinguished author and journalst who adds to the LSU faculty reputation. He is quite the opposite of a p----, rather he is fearless with his signed opinions which have put him in the crosshairs of those in power.

Guy is a complete joke, and I have no idea how he has lasted as long as he has at LSU. Read some of the crap he publishes and you will see the guy is the definition of a hack. He is an academic snob who has absolutely no clue of anything outside of his tiny little academic bubble, and comes off as a pompous piece of shite.

The most distinctive aspect of the underlying article is that it is an obvious hit piece, but a couple of bitter, jealous old farts.
There really is little of substance there except they hate Mann.
Maybe because he is a "liberal".
Or a socialist.
Or a Kenyan...

Mann was the dumbass who chose to act like athletics is stealing money that's set aside for academics. Why is it wrong for either party to point out that he's just a bag of hot air. Maybe Mann should go out and fundraise for the academic side rather than writing political hit pieces for the rag that employs him.
