Regarding the fact the Miles had to seek new employment, which would offset some buyout costs, I am guessing that Miles was not planning to coach again and LSU knew that. Which means the buyout amount would have remained high.

I thought he had to make a goodwill effort to seek employment to get the buyout

So is this strictly a case of he'll keep coaching as long as it's at LSU, doesn't want to start over? He can't just retire because he's leaving a ton of money on the table, so what, rock and a hard place for both sides?

He does have to "make an effort" but you're right. If he doesn't coach again then it would become a negotiation about his "effort" to seek employment and a settlement figure.

Exactly what I was going to post.

As to the "goodwill effort", simply demanding a salary comparable to his LSU salary would probably get him eliminated shortly after the interview process, if not before.

Anyone who has ever negotiated contracts or even bid on jobs they didn't want knows that you can use economics to get a "favorable" decline of services.
