What study material did you use? How much did you pay for it? Are there any free study material that allow you to pass Level 1 without spending hundreds of dollars on books?

Kaplan's Schwesser notes convince a lot of the material. I recommend buying the books, or getting the material other ways...and getting the Qbank, which is their stock pile of practice questions, over 4K. The key to success IMO is doing as many problems as you can. You are gonna have to drop 400 to sign up for the CFA program, another 800 on the test and give up 200-300 hours studying. Don't cheap out on the study material.

I didn't buy any third party study materials. I bought the CFA textbooks, and I have been using the topic tests provided by the Institute.

I've heard from many charter-holders that it probably very beneficial to have the Schweser materials in addition to the books provided by the Institute.
