Assume that I won the powerball but I paid for the ticket with a prepaid gift card. Would that void the winning ticket?

Yes.

I'll take that worthless piece of paper off your hands.

I don't see why it would be a problem. It's money on the card.

Method of payment has no bearing on that.

All you need is the winning ticket in hand with your signature on the back to claim it as yours.

I was under the impression that it had to be paid for in cash.

What if I stole the ticket from the store?

A prepaid card is the same as cash, just like using a debit card. I believe you just can't use credit cards.

You don't have to be the one buying the ticket, as long as someone bought the ticket.

You could have picked it up out of the trash. Makes no difference.

I've tried to pay for one on a credit card/debit card and they told me it had to be in cash.

What state? I believe they started taking debit cards in LA a few years ago.

It was in LA. This was a while ago, though. Ever since then I've always paid in cash.

Administrative regulations do not prohibit the use of credit cards to purchase Lottery products. Even though regulations allow credit cards to be used to purchase Lottery tickets, retailers can decide what form of payment they will accept and some do not accept credit cards to buy Lottery tickets. Regulations do prevent retailers from extending individual store credit for the purchase of Lottery tickets.

Well, criminal activity is another matter.

Not sure how you'd steal a ticket. Maybe the cashier prints up a quick pick ticket and hands it to you without accepting payment, but I don't know how a lottery retailer can get around that.

The lottery commission doesn't care how it was purchased as long as it was obtain legally.
