I know math is hard sometimes... But think of it like this.

If Les were to stay 1 more year, 4 would be 1/3 of his tenure.

If Les left 3 years ago, 4 would be half of his tenure.

That makes 4 closer to 1/3 of his tenure, because 1 is less than 3.
