What's the difference between ISIS and ISIL?

The president seems to want to refer to the Muslim terrorists as ISIL instead of ISIS. Is it some sort of kinder, gentler reference to mass murderers?

They go by several names, so we are allowed to bomb them once for each name.

Obama has to include Israel as a bad guy. He hates them, so ISIL it is for him.

The AP's explanation:
quote:
In Arabic, the group is known as Al-Dawla Al-Islamiya fi al-Iraq wa al-Sham, or the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham. The term “al-Sham” refers to a region stretching from southern Turkey through Syria to Egypt (also including Lebanon, Israel, the Palestinian territories and Jordan). The group’s stated goal is to restore an Islamic state, or caliphate, in this entire area.
The standard English term for this broad territory is “the Levant.” Therefore, AP’s translation of the group’s name is the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, or ISIL.

Sort of the opposite, actually. The term "Levant" is an archaic term for the area going back to the crusades. Using the word for the region that crusaders used is probably a bit more offensive than using the name of a country.
