This is pretty huge, Iger is about as highly regarded as one can get.

quote:

The San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders have reached an agreement for Bob Iger, the highly-regarded Disney chairman and CEO, to become chairman of their bid to build a stadium in Carson, Calif. according to sources with knowledge of the situation. It's a potentially game-changing move that could propel those teams to the Los Angeles market by next season.

quote:

Iger has a world-renowned reputation in the entertainment realm, he is an expert on the LA market and he brings extensive Disney acumen to this project.

The Carson project already had, by some owner's estimates, 16-20 votes of support prior to this development; it will require 24 votes for either stadium initiative to proceed, and many of the key members of the Los Angeles committee (Jerry Richardson and the Rooney and Mara families, for instance) had already been firmly in the Carson camp, sources said, even before Iger came on board.

I'm starting to think this deal is damn near done. Oakland is still about as far off for a new stadium as San Diego is and time is just about out. Voting is in January, and now you've got one of the biggest and best possible names behind the Carson Project.

Did enough teams get what they wanted from their current cities? That's the key. Los Angeles has always been the gun to the head of cities that have a team. When it's no longer an open city, it's no longer a credible threat.

Plus if it's the Raiders and Chargers, Oakland and San Diego aren't going to be viable threats (like St Louis might be without the Rams). This particular scenario will make it a lot harder to extort cities. You'll be down to question marks like San Antonio, Toronto, London.

Will it cause a problem that both these teams are in the same conference and division? Charger and raider fans being roommates doesn't seem like a good idea.
