The contenders:
Ruger 9e - would be first semi auto pistol and upgraded home defense choice
Stoeger M3000 - already have 12g but would like to get a coated one to keep salt water damage down
S&W M&P15 Sport - I just want one

Spend an extra $50 and get the A300 Outlander from Beretta.
But if you already have a shotgun then go with the Ruger.

No experience with a Ruger 9e-but have an old P93DC that has been flawless.
I have a Stoeger M3500 in camo with a 26" barrel. I just got back from SD pheasant hunting, and it killed birds just like (or better than) everyone else's fancy O/U's. Plus, the thing will take a licking and keep ticking. It is a pleasure to shoot.
ImpactGuns had M&P15's for $588.00 earlier this week. Damn good deal.

You'd be fine with any of those

Buy the m&p sport. The shotgun you mentioned that doesn't have salt protection could always be cerakoted for cheaper than buying a new shotgun.

A handgun's compact size makes it versatile for trips out of town and such. Keep that in mind.
The M&P15 would be an excellent home defense gun as well but does not have the compact size of a handgun.
You already have a 12 gauge. Save that idea for later.

Every American should own a semi-auto rifle of some sort. Well, every American that isnt a complete fricking moron like Missouri seems to be comprised of.

What is your budget? And how quickly can it increase? When is your birthday?
