There is this weird dissonance with this movie. It didn't feel like a real movie - but some fan homage. Most of it didn't ring true - it was like red carpet affair...and way too obvious rings back to A New Hope. It's not a bad movie-going experience - it just feels like it's just fandom and not a real movie. Everything is homage in the movie. It's sentimental - and works on that level, I guess - But doesn't work as a real movie. The story is thin as ice. It was nice for the fans - but it's nothing to be remembered like Empire or the original.

It's flawed, which the OT is as well, but it's everything it needed to be to reboot the franchise. As far as a soft reboot is a concerned, it's pretty much flawless. This is a huge investment on Disney, and they had to have an opening product that put the faith back in the franchise with the fans, all while introducing likable new characters and making it familiar to the audience. In the next movies, they'll take more chances and put the Star Wars mythos to a new and unprecedented level the series hasn't been before. It was everything I was hoping for, and expect Episode VIII to be equal or as good as Empire. This wasn't, but it didn't need to be either. It was exactly the film it needed to be.
