Consumer Reports rates the reliability of major appliances based on their annual survey of 115,000 users. It's pretty spot on. Either subscribe to the on-line magazine or check a copy at your library.
BTW, Speed Queen is the highest rated top-loading washer by a pretty wide margin.

yeah, nope.
find yourself a $75 1980s mechanical W&D set and you'll likely never spend more than a couple hundred dollars in the next 30 years.
or you can buy a brand new LG/Samsung/GE/Maytag whatever, spend $1300 on the set, another $500 on pedestals and pay Napoleon $500 every time he comes out and replaces your circuit board.
