When I first heard this, someone said it was 30 people that would make it about even odds. I said no-way! and resorted to my probability equations to disprove it.

When I came up with 23 I was doubly astonished, but first figured I had made a mistake since it was so far from 30, so I went back and did it all over again with a different approach.

I still find it hard to believe - just doesn't seem right.

It isn't intuitive, but when you think about what is really going on it starts to make sense. 23 different people make a great number of possible unique pairs.
