my 14 yo niece had hers confiscated for 2 weeks for repeated violations. It was incredible motivation for her to follow the rules.

At my old school the policy generally was take it away until the end of the period on first offense, end of the day on 2nd, a week on the 3rd, and 30 days on the 4th (sometimes the parent would contact the board and we'd have to release it to them though).

My parents would tell them to keep it permanently. They wouldn't go to bat for me if this were a problem to where my phone got taken up all the time. They would tell me tough shite and to get quarters for a pay phone.

In 6th grade when Pokémon was really popular I brought my Game Boy to school and it got taken up. I didn't see that shite again for 2 weeks as my parents taught me a tough lesson.
