Why do criminals do most of the things they do? The vast majority aren't your stereotypical Lex Luther criminal masterminds. They're stupid people, who do stupid shite.

I do, however, agree that this could of been a kidnapping that went off of script. (Because, again, criminals are usually pretty stupid.)

If it was a straight up robbery and murder, and I had to venture a guess, I'd speculate that the perpetrators moved the victims to a place where an unattended vehicle might not attract attention for a few days - in this case, a truck stop 45 miles from the crime scene, with hundreds of vehicles in the lot - giving them a head start. Also, if the victims' vehicle wasn't in the driveway, neighbors may not be suspicious as to why the victims hadn't been seen for a day or two.

I'm also going to go out on limb and say that I don't the perps blew up a house (TWICE!) to destroy evidence and/or create a diversion.

The vehicle was also parked in a specific area of the lot, where it wouldn't be noticed.

A murder scene in an empty home and leaving bodies in a vehicle at a truck stop is two opportunities for someone to figure out something is up. Whereas just leaving the bodies in the home leaves just one. The malefactors were either kidnapping or stupid. Or both.

That is a good point.

I doubt it was a kidnapping. There were no signs of a struggle and the safe was open. This says to me that they and the criminal(s) knew each other well enough for the couple to let them in the house and for the criminals to know there was a safe.

As there's no evidence of a struggle in the home, I can't help but think the criminals must have taken the couple to another location to kill them before bringing them to the truck stop (trying to kill two people in a pickup truck in a busy truckstop parking lot would be likely to attract attention).

That they drove the couple so far from town and left them in their truck in a place where it wouldn't draw attention tells me they either planned this well or the truckstop was just a fluke choice.

The extra information that isn't widely known yet will be interesting (estimated time of death, cause of death, condition of the truck, the last time anyone heard from or saw either of the couple, etc).
