Weather permitting, a drive up to the summit of Mt. Washington is worth the time. It's the highest peak in New England and is where the highest wind speed ever recorded on land occurred......231 mph.

The day we were there the wind was gusting to 56 mph with sustained winds of 40 mph. It was a clear day with a summit temp of 43 degrees so we could see the valleys is all four directions which was spectacular with the foliage colors.

Four days after we left, the summit had 8" of snow which closed the summit road.

Mt. Washington is about a three hour drive from Portland, ME.

I hiked the summit of Mt. Washington on my AT thru-hike. We hit it on the most perfect day: 45° and zero wind, clear blue skies all around. They said they get maybe four days a year like that.

Incidentally, to the OP, the very bottom of this page has a link "Where to watch LSU." Unfortunately, there are no listings for Portland, Maine, but it's worth remembering for future cities
