Learn me something about crab season

So I go buy about 7 dz crab this wknd to boil...as were counting them out I notice their all females. I knew the season was coming to an end but didnt realize all the males died off. Is this what happens? And of course they were pretty light and thin shelled.

Combination of factors. Males tend to be bigger, so get culled for select. Plus, lots of females thrown back during summer breeding season due to eggs, so more around now that it is over. Also explains them not being full, all that energy devoted to eggs.
