When they killed Phil Leotardo at the gas station in front of his wife, I took it to mean that the proverbial gloves were off. If Tony being shot is really what happened, it was probably due to that IMO.

I agree. I also like the theory that Patsy was in on it and may have had a deal with Butch, to let both Phil and Tony get whacked so they could end the war (since most of it was Phil and Tony's fault anyway) and those two could assume control. Patsy had motivation because he knew Tony ordered his brother's whacking.
I've grown to like and appreciate the ending, the way the whole season set up and led to it. It does kind of suck that we don't see the how the NJ crew looks after war. Is Silvio a veg the rest of his life? What happens to Paulie after he finally takes over the supposed cursed crew? Is AJ still a pussy? But that ties back into the story being told from Tony's POV and everything stops when he's whacked.
