It was a great ending. I was pissed when it happened but over the years have come to appreciate its brilliance. It is open to interpretation but either way you interpret it is not good for Tony.
Obviously, in one interpretation he is dead and the last thing he saw is his daughter witnessing his brains getting blasted all over the floor.
The other interpretation is that he will spend the rest of his life looking over his shoulder and will eventually get whacked. What kind of life is that?
Either way, Tony is not living happily ever after.

Completely agree.
I hated it at the time but have grown to like it because it pretty leaves it open to interpretation to any viewpoint or opinion. Did he die? Was the guy just random, harmless civilian? Is the entire scene a metaphor for the rest of his life? It's pretty much open to any way you can dissect it, which makes it a good ending.
