It's the best film Disney has ever made. It's the clear gold standard that all Disney films are measured against. It's the movie that called Disney out for their ridiculous simplifications and having nothing but bimbos as protagonists (Ariel being the worst). Beauty and the Beast turned the Disney formula on its head, and if you made Cinderella and Snow White exactly as they were these days, it would critically bomb because of how good this film is in comparison.

While Lion King is the favorite for most people our age, I don't think many try to emulate it all that much or set it as a bar to surpass. Frozen got in the ballpark of the Lion King, but I don't think it's as good as Beauty and the Beast. Hunchback I think is the only one that comes close to Beauty and the Beast, but even it falls greatly short of its greatness due solely to the gargoyles.
