I don't think it has aged as well as Scream, but it is the film that really kicked off the meta horror genre. This is the film that truly changed the genre, even if it was the first attempt for Scream. Some of the things about the film which seemed so radical in 1990, now are standard tropes so the film has lost some of its power. Still, a great document of moving horror forward.

Right. It was basically Scream two years before Scream came out.
It's pretty good. I never was into the NOES series since I hated scary movies as a kid, but I liked this one though. And I agree that Scream holds up much better than New Nightmare.
And I also fully expected Freauxzen to be the first response in this thread, but he was actually the first two responses.

So I just made my better half watch Scream 1-3, and yeah they still hold up quite well. But I'd disagree about New Nightmare. Parts of it ring a little cheesy now, but I think that's fairly normal for the genre.
There's no way to get her to watch any Nightmare film. No way.
