Prior to the 2009-2010 season we all wondered what it exactly took to win a Super Bowl. What would that feeling feel like to us? Would it really feel that magical? Is it possible to feel that jubilant and untouchable? For many it was a wild dream we never thought would become a reality in our lifetimes no matter our age. Well, that season it happened. And every season prior to that one we fought like hell always to no avail in reaching the big game. As confetti poured down on SunLife stadium that February night we finally realized what it meant and felt like to be a Super Bowl champion. Since that magical season we’ve failed to get back to the big game (2011-2012 was our best chance to get back since). As the years pass I go from being a young kid being broken hearted that his team failed to reach the playoffs to look forward to next season to an adult that knows the reality no matter how good or bad your season is whether that’s 12-4 or 6-10, there can only be one winner in the end. Pre 2009 8-8 was great; post 2009 and if it isn’t 10 or more wins and a championship game appearance the season is a failure. The ultimate goal for every team is to be hoisting that Lombardi trophy at seasons end. Anything short of that and it’s a disappointment. I’m not that naïve to believe the Saints should win it every season; that just isn’t possible. It’s not even enough to be “In the hunt”, we have to be a number one or two seed during the season. That’s what 2009 taught us, is that we can have a winner here, we’ve been there, we can do it again and we will do it again….when is anybody’s guess. See, that’s what winning a Super Bowl can do; it can give you that invincibility that you’re always going to be there but it can also be a cruel indicator that things don’t always last.
