My first diesel as well. I honestly had no idea about all the maintenance, but when the dealer quoted me $800 for the DSG service I said frick off and researched how to do it myself. There are a couple of youtube videos out there.
I did the top fill method as well. Just measured how much drained out and replaced it with the same amount.
