No kickbacks. It's just that your company (like many) want a sense of giving back to the community and United Way is easy and generic. Donations given to them get passed onto many other charities (minus an administration fee), mostly at United Way's choice. It is easy because then the company has to deal with only one charity (versus having to choose from an endless list of choices and then deal with employee complaints about whatever they chose).

United Way is good people but I prefer to work directly with the charities to see a more direct impact of our time/efforts and so that the charity gets 100% of the funds.
