I'm trying to find info about the sideloading capabilities, but I'm coming up empty. I'll update when I can.
Losing the optical port is a understandable, considering most people who have premium audio have HDMI receivers.

This is a big release...especially for the 4K crowd. I will be buying this for my non-smart (older) 4k tv which just has a chromecast on it right now (no cable box).
Only other major 4k streaming device is the Shield TV which is $200 and doesnt have Amazon Prime video which absolutely sucks (if you have it). Voice search is a big addition (like the Roku 3)

Exactly. Very understandable
I personally use the optical ports on both of my fire tv's. 1 of my receivers is older and doesn't have HDMI.
With my newer receiver, I ran the HDMI direct to the TV because my wife doesn't want to fool with the receiver when using the fire tv.the optical gives me the option bypass the receiver but still use it when I need it.
But for the majority, they probably don't need it.
