re: Weird things you've seen in nature

My kids and I were driving through a state park campground after swimming in a lake there. Probably midday. A great horned owl swooped out of the trees and landed in the road right in front of us. Just stood there for a bit then took off again.
I've spent a lot of time in nature and never seen one in the wild up close and on the ground. I tried to explain to my kids who freaking cool and rare it was to see that, but I don't think they were impressed, beyond just thinking they'd seen a cool owl.

An owl flew up from the side of the road with a small dog - carrying it by the collar. I think the dog had been run over by a car, but not sure.

Not seen but heard.
A few months back something woke my wife and I up. Sounded like a screeching monkey. Kinda drug on, reverberating through the woods. Was really haunting and disturbing to wake up to.
Only thing that is native to Alabama that even kind of sounds like that is the Barred Owl. But I'm in a area surrounded by ridges. They are normally only in flatlands. Thing is, this was more of a screech than a Barred owl's normal call.
Edit: Weirdest thing seen was probably when 3 turkeys flew out of the woods in front of my truck. I missed the last one by about 2 ft. Just barely went by my windshield.
