Meh, they'd be making money regardless. That's primarily why they've kept him around thus far, but you've got to think that they could buy themselves an inordinate amount good will from NFL fans if they got rid of him unceremoniously. Fans around the country would rejoice like the end of Return of the Jedi.
Given all of the black eyes and screw ups lately at the feet of Goodell, it's not inconceivable that the owners would think about making a move now. This has been a year and a half now of constant public (and now legal) embarrassment for the league.
However, if they don't get rid of him now, it's obvious that Goodell is privy to some extremely incriminating info regarding concussions and the owners are scared of cutting him loose.
