His job is safe as long as the money keeps rolling in, and the money will keep rolling in.

Any guy appointed commissioner of the NFL would make money for the owners.

True. He's not the best business man in the world.

Donald Trump would make a better commissioner than a president

yes, I'm sure he has no autonomy or makes any choices of his own.

you think the NFL owners are paying a Roomba 40 mil a year?

This. He got the networks to increase the recent TV deal about 60% according to some articles. Also got DirecTV to pay 12 billion over 8 years for Sunday Ticket (not withstanding the legal challenges).

The owners won't really care about league difficulties until it causes trouble for them legally or financially. That hasn't happened, so we get to keep watching Goodell flounder occasionally.

I'm so tired of hearing this argument. He doesn't "make money", the league does. A fricking monkey could run the league and do a better job than Goodell. Tags is the commish who embraced fantasy football which is what eventually got women interested and drove up ratings to record highs and allowed for these lucrative TV deals. But let's be honest, the NBA and MLB are also enjoying record TV deals as well (not to mention college football, which doesn't have fantasy at all).

Goodell shouldn't get all this credit simply for being the commissioner during a surge in football's popularity

You are probably right, but he is their guy. As long as the NFL continues to generate the kind of money it's generating, I don't think he'll go anywhere

Failures/disasters:
-Rice controversy
-Bountygate
-Deflategate

More subjective/minor:
-Thursday Night Football
-Trying to trademark "who dat" and losing

For a guy that makes well in excess of the average CEO and is the leader of America's most popular sport, he sure seems like a complete clown. The only major issues I can agree with him on are the Redskins mascot and Adrian Peterson (but AP is a no brainer). Not sure how I feel about Spygate, he got criticized for being too harsh. Probably would rather a more severe punishment but am ambivalent.
