Do you ask the same question when considering the millions of Americans that came here fleeing war, religious oppression and economic stagnation?

After all, the Italians, Chinese, Irish, Polish, Germans, English, etc. could have just stuck around and made their countries better, right?

Regardless or the problems caused by mass migrations, anyone that looks at their respective situations and say, "It would be better to abandon everything I own, everything I know, pack what few belongings will fit in this suitcase and run thousands of miles away into the unknown than stay here," warrant our sympathies and any succor we can give them.

The chief problem European nations face is that their entire system of government is built upon the foundation of a largely homogeneous population with a shared history, culture, and system of values. This allows socialism to work. Once you introduce an outside element that doesn't share that same history and attitude, it falls apart.
